Home / Trailer Types Explained

Flatbed vs step-deck vs lowboy

Three trailers, one question: how tall is your freight? Here's the plain-English version of how brokers pick the deck — so the quote you get makes sense.

Standard flatbed — the default

Step-deck (drop-deck) — for tall freight

Lowboy (RGN) — for the seriously tall and heavy

Hot shot — the right-sized option

The honest rule of thumb

Freight under about 8'6\" tall rides a flatbed. Between roughly 8'6\" and 10' — step-deck territory. Taller than that, you're talking lowboy, and possibly permits anyway. Don't buy more trailer than the load needs; don't gamble an over-height ticket to save a few hundred dollars. Your broker's job is to land that call correctly — it's question two on every quote.

Common questions

Why did my quote change when I corrected the height?

Because the trailer changed. An inch past the flatbed height budget moves the load to a step-deck market with different rates and availability — that's why we measure before we quote.

What about hotshots?

Smaller flatbed setups pulled by heavy-duty pickups — great for lighter machines and partial loads on shorter lanes. If your freight fits one, it's often the economical answer, and we broker those too.

One call books your freight.

No portals, no accounts, no nine-field forms. Tell a real broker what you're shipping and we'll have pre-screened carriers competing for your load.
